Although these two terms are related, their meanings are subtly different. There are many ways to help understand the distinstion.

Metaphor :
From the ditionary,it defines a 'metaphor' as a figure of speech that uses one thing to mean another and makes a comparison between the two.For instance, from the shakespeare's line, "all the world's a stage," is a metaphor comparing the whole world to a theater stage.Metaphor is very simple, and they can function as most any part of speech."The spy shadowed  the woman" is a verb metaphor. The spy doesn't literally cast his shadow on the woman, but he follows her so closely and quietly that he resembles her own shadow.

Analogy :
An anology is a little complicated. At the most basic way,an anology shows similarity between things that might  seem different much like an extended metaphor. But anology isn't just a form of speech. It can be a logical argument. For example,if two things are alike in some ways, they are alike in some other ways as well.Anology is often used to help provide insight by comparing an unknown subject to one that is more familiar. It can also a relationship between pairs of things. This form of anology is often used standardized tests in the form of  "A is to B as C is to D."

To make it clear, juxtaposition represent a definition of placing two or more things or subjects side-by-side. In the world of art, juxtaposition is used of bringing out a certain quality, developing or creating a special effects especially when two or more different elements are used. By that concept, the audience or the viewer's attention is focused to the similarities or the differences between those elements used.

On the other hand, juxtaposition can also be use as terms of formal elements. For example, an artist could juxtaposed an organic elements of life and nature against urban environment, as to highlight the different value among the two elements used.

What is Creativity and Critical Thinking

Creativity :
From my point of view, creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

There are few reasons on why people are motivated to be creative :

  1. need for novel, varied, and complex stimulation
  2. need to communicate ideas and values
  3. need to solve problems

The most important is,in order to be creative you need to be able to view things in different ways. Among all things, you need to be able to generate new solutions. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives. the ability to generate alternatives or to see things uniquely does not occur by change; it is linked to other, more fundamental qualities of thinking, such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability, and the enjoyment of things heretofore unknown.

Characteristics of the creative personality :
  1. Creative individuals have a great deal of energy, but they are also often quiet and at rest.
  2. Creative individuals tend to be smart, yet also naive at the same time.
  3. Creative individuals have a combination of playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
  4. Creative individuals alternate between imagination and fantasy ant one end, and rooted sense of reality at the other.
  5. Creative people seem to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion.
  6. Creative individuals are also remarkable humble and proud at the same time.
  7. Creative individuals to a certain extent escape rigid gender role stereotyping and have a tendency toward androgyny.
  8. Generally, creative people are thought to be rebellious and independent.
  9. Most creative persons are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
  10. The openness and sensitivity of creative individuals often exposes them to suffering pain yet also a great deal of enjoyment.

Critical Thinking :
The definition of critical thinking is described as "reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do." It has also been described as "thinking inside thinking." In addition to that, critical thinking has been described as "the process of purposeful which uses reasoned consideration to evidence, methods, and criteria."

The meaning of Critical thinking is "critical" shows the importance of the thinking to a question,or problem of concern. "Critical" in this context does not mean "disapproval" or "negative".There are many positive and useful uses of critical thinking.

Critical thinking can occur whenever one judges or solves a problem,in general, whenever one must figure out what to believe or what to do,and so in a reasonable and reflective way.Meaning, critical thinking is "a way to think for a solutions of life."

We are thinking critically when we :

  1. Rely on reason rather than emotion
  2. Require evidence
  3. More concerned with finding the best explanation than asking questions
  4. Weigh the influences of motives
  5. Recognize our own assumptions or point of view

Creativity

The dictionary description is: the ability to create
and presumes 'consciousness' and 'understanding' (both rational myths)

Bulls fight rules without 'understanding', but with intelligent creativity

Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun." quote Mary Lou Cook

Compromise hides a fight between the skillful Roman Catholic 'slave-farm' cultures (superior 'bodies' with 'spirit' exploit inferior 'bodies' without 'spirit')
and the creative Buddhist 'unity of body and mind' cultures.

'Ploughshare' thinkers consider body-spirit-split as fascism.

Creativity may have killed a few cats, but evolution certainly eliminated many more incurious ones; Guy Claxton in 'Wise Up'

My definition of 'creativity':

Making individual curiosity useful for your collective, by:
Influencing static
knowledge by attacking with discrete variation + selection (dynamic intelligence)
Static knowledge is the 'bible-type of knowledge', mainly 'frozen'. Dynamic intelligence uses variation for change.

Warning: Unlike 'rational' researchers I think that 'understanding' is fantasy (thinking=daydreaming),
and that Intelligence is related to bodily BEHAVIOR (
rituals)

Like: climbing 'mountains' intelligently using 'movability'
Or changing reactions by random shuffling of sense units (playing
Joker)

Critical Thinking

Definition of Concept & Theory

What is critical thinking? There are a variety of answers to that question, but most experts agree that it includes the ability for a person to use his/her intelligence, knowledge and skills to question and carefully explore situations to arrive at thoughtful conclusions based on evidence and reason. A critical thinker is able to get past biases and view situations from different perspectives to ultimately improve his/her understanding of the world. In those two sentences lie a lifetime of work for an individual, work that begins with a formal education in critical thinking skills. A student once told me, "Whatever you teach me, what I believe is true." This is the crux of teaching critical thinking. It cannot be taught as an absolute. There are no formulas to memorize or tests to take. Teaching critical thinking is about helping students discover the answers. That said, there are some basic tools that you can use to begin to teach critical thinking to students.

John Chaffee in The Thinker's Guide to College Success defines thinking critically as "carefully examining our thinking (and the thinking of others) in order to clarify and improve our understanding." He suggests providing students with practice and guidance in the five activities listed below:
  • Thinking Actively by using our intelligence, knowledge, and skills to question, explore, and deal effectively with ourselves, others, and life's situations.
  • Carefully Exploring Situations by asking--and trying to answer--relevant questions.
  • Thinking for Ourselves by carefully examining various ideas and arriving at our own thoughtful conclusions.
  • Viewing Situations from Different Perspectives to develop an in-depth, comprehensive understanding.
  • Supporting Diverse Perspectives with Reason and Evidence to arrive at thoughtful, well-substantiated conclusions.
The World Wide Web provides a wealth of materials and is a wonderful tool for teaching critical thinking to students. The Instructor and Student Exercise sections of this module offer many suggestions for teaching critical thinking with technology.

CREATIVITY:
There's a lot of definition, examples and expression of creativity by various professional and experts around the globe. In my research, I found and article that define creativity as the ability to transcend traditional ideas, relationships, patterns, rules and also to create or invent new fresh ideas, methods and interpretations.

On top of that, creativity is also defined as the act of transforming new, imaginative and fresh ideas to life. Thinking and producing is the two processes that involves in creativity. Innovation is the main production of a new bright and new idea. Ones will be called imaginative but not creative if they did not act on their ideas.

Creativity is something that requires a strong passion and deep commitment because symbols and myths is born out of the creative act. Creativity also brings us our awareness of what was previously hidden and points of new life.

CRITICAL THINKING:
What is critical thinking? It is a process or method of thinking that questions assumptions and predictions. It is an essentials and a very important component or ways of most professions in this world. Critical thinking is also a part of today's education process and increasingly significant as students progress on their education life.

From another view, critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process throughout an actively developing problem solving method. It is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions. Moreover, it is also defined as a set of skills to process and generate information and beliefs creatively.
